Are you a young adult dreaming of working, traveling, and gaining international experience in Canada? The International Experience Canada (IEC) program offers exciting opportunities for citizens of over 30 countries to live and work in Canada temporarily while exploring one of the world's most welcoming and diverse countries.

Whether you want to fund your travels, gain valuable professional experience, or complete an internship, the IEC program could be your gateway to Canada—and potentially your first step toward permanent residence.

What Is International Experience Canada (IEC)?

International Experience Canada (IEC) is a youth mobility program that allows eligible citizens from countries that have signed bilateral agreements with Canada to obtain temporary work permits.

Most applicants must be between 18 and 35 years old (some countries have an age limit of 30).

The IEC program has three categories:

1. Working Holiday

The Working Holiday category provides an open work permit, allowing participants to work for almost any employer in Canada.

This category is ideal for:

  • Young travelers wanting to explore Canada.

  • Individuals seeking temporary employment.

  • Those wishing to gain Canadian work experience.

No job offer is required before applying.

2. Young Professionals

The Young Professionals category provides an employer-specific work permit for applicants who have a job offer that contributes to their professional development.

This category is suitable for:

  • Recent graduates.

  • Young professionals seeking career advancement.

  • Individuals with skilled employment opportunities in Canada.

A valid job offer is required.

3. International Co-op (Internship)

The International Co-op category allows post-secondary students to complete internships or work placements related to their field of study.

This category is intended for:

  • College and university students.

  • Mandatory internships required by academic programs.

  • Students seeking international work experience.

A job offer or internship placement is required.

General Eligibility Requirements

Although requirements vary by country, applicants generally must:

  • Be citizens of an eligible participating country.

  • Hold a valid passport.

  • Meet the age requirement (18–30 or 18–35 depending on nationality).

  • Have sufficient funds to support themselves upon arrival.

  • Obtain health insurance for the entire duration of their stay.
