On December 7th, 2023, Canada's Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced the extension of the policy allowing international students to work full-time both on and off campus. International students already in Canada, as well as applicants who have already submitted an application for a study permit as of December 7, 2023, will be able to work off campus more than 20 hours per week until April 30th, 2024.

Under normal circumstances most International students studying in Canada are usually eligible to work while they are studying. This can provide them with valuable work experience and help offset some of their living expenses. However, there has always been a cap on the number of hours that international students can work off campus (maximum of 20 hours/week).

In order to be eligible for work opportunities, international students must have a valid study permit and be actively enrolled(studying) full time in a designated learning institution. Also, there are different types of work permits available for international students, including co-op work permits for students participating in a co-operative education program, as well as post-graduation work permits for students who have completed their studies and wish to gain work experience in Canada. It is important for international students to familiarise themselves with the specific requirements and regulations surrounding employment in Canada to ensure they are eligible and compliant.
